Pregnancy by Weeks
Pregnancy is an adventure! Let us help you—find pregnancy week-by-week info on the baby’s development, pregnancy symptoms week-by-week, and weekly tasks. The entire period of pregnancy is divided into three trimesters.
First Trimester
The first trimester of pregnancy lasts 13 weeks and is characterized by the embryo’s development into a fetus. Some early symptoms like nausea, fatigue, and breast tenderness may occur. Major organs and systems, such as the brain, spine, heart, and limbs, start forming. The fetus will rapidly increase in size. Taking care of oneself during this stage by eating healthily, being physically active, and receiving regular prenatal care is vital for optimal development.
Second Trimester
The second trimester of pregnancy is also known as the “golden period” since most unpleasant symptoms from the first trimester subside. The baby’s organs continue to develop, and the sex of the baby can be determined via ultrasound. Additionally, the mother’s womb expands, making her more visibly pregnant. Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise is essential for the mom and baby’s well-being. This period is ideal for the couple to begin preparing for the baby’s arrival via childbirth classes and a birth plan.
Third Trimester
The third trimester is the final stage before delivery. The baby grows fast and reaches full size, causing the mother discomfort like swelling and heartburn. Rest and good health are necessary since the baby’s systems are still developing. The baby turns head-down for delivery and may practice breathing. Braxton Hicks contractions prepare the body for labor. The healthcare provider and the mother will work together before the delivery to ensure a safe and healthy outcome for both.
