Pregnancy Week 18

Baby Development

Your baby is around five and three-quarters in length from head to buttock, which is also called crown-rump length. The baby is 8 1/3 inches long if you go by crown-heel measurement. The baby weighs around 220 gm or 8 ounces during this time. Now the baby is practicing sleeping ability and developing an internal clock to monitor it. The baby starts producing myelin, an amalgam of fat and protein that separates and protects the brain, the spinal cord, and the nervous system. Though still developing, the baby’s reproductive system is developed enough for the Doctor to determine sex accurately. The baby would also start kicking during this time to announce its presence.

Changes in mother

By this time, you will be showing your cute baby bump. People would now have the urge to come and touch your belly. Gently remind people not to do that if you find their touch uncomfortable. Also, remember the size of the baby bump varies from mother to mother and from external conditions like your height, weight, and whether it’s the first child. There would be back pain as your increase in the uterus shifts your center of gravity. Relaxin is a pregnancy hormone secreted at these that relaxes the joints and ligaments. Relaxation of the ligament and joints connecting the pelvis to the spine further aggravates the back pain.
